Arbor Day encourages us to remember the importance of trees

For the fourth consecutive year, the San Marcos Art League (SMAL) is pleased to be bringing Art Scared back to the downtown Square on Saturday, Oct. 21. The temporary Halloween public art installation is open to area children, elementary through high school age. Participants are invited to paint a section of a designated window with a fall or Halloween-themed image. Painted windows will remain on display for the public to enjoy through early November.

Dunbar Heritage Association plans for 23-24 events

The Wimberley Players and 7A Ranch have teamed up to bring Haunted Pioneer Town and Train Ride of Terror to the Texas Hill Country on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Texas State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents New Works Festival Oct. 20 - 22 in Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The New Works Festival features three play-readings: “70.3” by Sam Mueller, “The Last Mixtape” by Raul Garza, and “Marry Me, Bruno Mars” by Megan Tabaque. Each reading will be featured each night of the festival in the above order.

San Marcos has an indigenous mermaid named Sirena del Rio who shares her magic through storytelling and song. Embodied by master naturalist Jessica Mejia, Sirena del Rio weaves together elements of nature, heritage and mental health to teach young children about self-empowerment.

Texas Hill Country to experience first of two eclipses Oct. 14

The Calaboose African American History Museum is celebrating the musical contributions and legacy of San Marcos native, Eddie Durham, with a free concert in Eddie Durham Park, 205 MLK Drive, across from the Calaboose Museum. Durham was a gifted jazz guitarist, trombonist, composer and arranger in the swing era. His work contributed to the popularity of Glen Miller, Bennie Moten, Count Basie and Jimmie Lunceford. He is credited with being the first person to record an amplified guitar when he was featured on the 1935 Jimmie Lunceford recording of Durham’s arrangement of “Hittin’ the Bottle.”
