Exploring Nature: Glorious Galveston

If you like to plan ahead, you might put the 22nd annual FeatherFest birding festival on your 2024 calendar. This year’s festival is set for April 18 - 21 on Galveston Island, one of my very favorite places. FeatherFest will offer sightings of over 200 species of birds during the height of spring migration. Birding and photo field trips will be led by Kevin Karlson, Greg Miller, Louise Zemaitis and a host of local experts. You can check out Galvestonfeatherfest.com for more information.

Chase away chills (and sniffles) with this hearty soup

Soup is a staple anytime the weather is chilly or when a person feels like they are coming down with a cold. The warm, therapeutic effects of a delicious bowl of soup are hard to dismiss, and may sometimes work as well as the best medicines available.

Y2K was 24 years ago? How did that happen?

Dear Readers, I’m thinking about Y2K, naturally. Do you remember what you were doing when the world was partying like it was 1999? I certainly do. I know you do too. If I’m doing the time-math correctly, it’s a safe assumption that people who are still reading the actual newspaper in 2024 were definitely around when the ball dropped on Y2K.

'Tina! — The Tina Turner Musical' opens at Bass Concert Hall

Her story starts in the humble town of Nutbush, Tenn., not as the American rock icon Tina Turner, but as Anna Mae Bullock, the fiery daughter of sharecroppers struggling to make a living in the 1940s. Before taking the crown as Queen of Rock n Roll, Tina Turner rose up from a broken household, poverty and abuse to become one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.
