I must confess that I haven’t attended a symphony orchestra performance since a long-ago elementary school field trip.

With the virus surging, now is especially not the time to be without health insurance. Open Enrollment is the short period during which you can enroll in health insurance, choose your plan, or switch to a better plan. Open Enrollment is underway right now, but you have only until Dec. 15 to sign up. Make the top priority on your holiday shopping list buying yourself and your loved ones health security.

Hypocrisy can be embarrassing — and also politically disabling. Austin Mayor Steve Adler got a dose of that nasty medicine this week, when Tony Plohetski — a reporter for KVUE-TV and the Austin American-Statesman — revealed that the mayor was in Cabo San Lucas when he took to Facebook in early November to send a stay-at-home message to his constituents.

That moment when the idea that the pandemic would be vanquished well before the holidays was replaced, somewhere along the way, by the thought that this “new normal” would be the norm for a long, long time.

Jane Hughson, our current San Marcos mayor, deserves to be reelected for another term. She has served our community well with intelligence and dignity and attention to detail — a combination that is desirable but too often rare.

COVID-19 is surging in El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo and other spots in Texas, and some of the biggest American family gatherings of the year — Thanksgiving — are just a few days away.

As challenging a year as 2020 has been, we still should be thankful that it has been the best year in human history to be alive.

All but one of the Republicans running statewide campaigns in Texas this year beat their opponents by 8 to 11 percentage points. The one? President Donald Trump, who beat Joe Biden by 5.8 percentage points.
