On the morning of 1 October, Albert Emil Dietz passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in San Marcos, Texas at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife, Edna May; his siblings, Doris Trevorah and Frank Dietz; his three sons and two daughters-in-law, Albert Steven and wife Jennifer, Mark David, Michael Paul and wife Elly. He had five grandchildren, Lorrin Simmons-Wang (Henry), Sharon Dietz Calderon (Paco), Aidan Wolf Dietz (Desirae), Mirabella Brianna Dietz and Sofia Nichole Dietz; and three great-grandchildren, Heidi Lucia and Max Emiliano Calderon and Camila Rae Dietz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Max Dietz and Bertha Christman Dietz; his brothers, Robert, Paul, and Charles; and his daughter, Sharon Jane.

Marie Welsh Jager of San Marcos, Texas passed away at the age of 91 at Brookdale North Assisted Living facility on Friday, October 9, 2020, where she was living. Mrs. Jager was born on February 3, 1929, in Iowa to the late John Edward and Josephine Pearl Welsh. When she was a young girl, she and her family moved to Denton, Texas. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, she began teaching in Eldorado, Texas. This is where she met the love of her life, Ronald Jager, on a blind date. Ron was geologist from Chicago, Illinois working for Sinclair Oil. They went on to be married for 64 wonderful years.

Hugh Goldsby Black, Jr.

Hugh Goldsby Black, Jr., 100 years old, longtime San Marcos resident, died peacefully in his home on October 7th, 2020. Hugh, born on September 20, 1920, grew up in Memphis, TN, with his parents, Hugh Goldsby Black, Sr., and Ola Mable Blancet Black, and his sister, Olive "Babe" Black (King). After graduating from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) with a BA in Music, he joined the U.S. Army. He fought in WWII, landing at Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion. After the war, he lived in Mexico, learning Spanish, which he taught later in Texas. He attended UT at Austin, earning his Master's Degree in Library Science. He joined Southwest Texas State's library, advancing to Head of Public Services, in charge of both Circulation and Reference Departments. In retirement, he was a dedicated volunteer tutor for ESL students at the San Marcos Public Library for more than 20 years.
