The world can use some extra joy right now and the students at Tobias Elementary are doing their part to uplift their community with kindness, compassion, unity and respect. To recognize Tobias Elementary School’s ongoing commitment to kindness and its participation in the 10th annual Great Kindness Challenge, it has been designated as a “Kindness Certified School” by Kids for Peace.

My journey this week starts with “cleaning out” my billfold. One item that I have carried for the last 55 years is my original copy of the Military Code of Conduct issued to me when I entered the service. Veterans would recognize this 2-inch x3-inch card, although my copy is so worn it is almost unreadable. The card is distributed to all active-duty personnel. It is especially applicable at times of war or imprisonment. Wikipedia described the “Code of the United States Fighting Force as an ethics guide and a United States Department of Defense directive consisting of the six articles. It is considered an important part of tradition and US military doctrine but is not ‘formal military law’ in the manner of the Uniform Code of Military Justice or of international law, such as the Geneva Conventions.” This Military Code of Conduct is as follows:

The last year has been challenging for social butterflies, as the COVID-19 pandemic has limited opportunities to socialize in person with close friends and family members.

A two-week pop-up display at the Price Center in downtown San Marcos features a visual display of gowns and costumes, printed matter and photos of annual royalty that helps tell the story of San Marcos’ Mistick Krewe of Okeanos, the creators of the annual Mardi Gras parade and celebrations in San Marcos.

Imagine a Valentine’s date night under the stars in a socially-distanced private park. In San Marcos, all it takes is an acre of land, a dreamer, and a plan.

The San Marcos River dominates many of our city’s public recreation areas, but it also defines the boundary of some private backyards near the city’s core. Riverside homes on Riviera Street in the Rio Vista subdivision, just upriver from Rio Vista Falls, share this unique river access as their property slopes down to the river’s edge. February’s yard of the month, chosen by Spring Lake Garden Club, features the home of Beverly Pairett and Brian Archer, who have enjoyed their riverside property since 1999, just after the 1998 flood, and have weathered more recent floods as well.

Two Garden Treasures have come together for a magnificent purpose and that is getting food to those who need it most. It is a story that is still being written and one that will tug at gardener’s hearts across the country.
