Exploring Our Roots

San Marcos’ own Indigenous Cultures Institute (ICI) has created “Napakō: Our Journey,” a multi-faceted display of photographs, powwow regalia, ceremonial jewelry, videos and original art to share the story of the Indigenous community in San Marcos. A companion show, “Exploring Our Roots” offers 30 original works of art focusing on personal and collective ancestry. Both shows are hanging now through Nov. 27 in the Price Center.

Ballet Hispánico celebrates 50th season with its return to Austin

To kick off Texas Performing Arts’ 40th Season, TPA welcomes Ballet Hispánico, the acclaimed Latinx dance company, back to Austin for their first appearance since 2002. The company is currently celebrating its 50th season and will perform the special anniversary program Noche de Oro: A Celebration of 50 Years on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, starting at $25, are available at TexasPerformingArts.org.

Davis, VFW marks anniversary as partner with Hays Co. Food Bank

Sept. 25 marked the one-year anniversary of Maurice T. Suttles VFW Auxiliary and Laura Davis working with the food bank to feed veterans and the community. VFW Post 3413 Auxiliary worked with Post Commander, Post Members, Veterans’ Service Officers and the Hays County Food Bank to provide a mobile food distribution for Veterans and their families.

SMAL’s Art Scared returning to Square Oct. 23

The San Marcos Art League (SMAL) is pleased to be bringing Art Scared back to the downtown Square on Saturday, Oct. 23. The temporary Halloween public art installation is open to area children, elementary through high school age. Participants are invited to paint a section of a designated window with a fall or Halloween-themed image. Painted windows will remain on display for the public to enjoy through early November.

Perennials for cool season containers may seem like the proverbial horticultural oxymoron, but that is exactly what I have been planting the last few days in my zone 8a landscape. My favorite pansy pals are Goldilocks lysimachia, Lemon Coral sedum, Ogon Japanese sweet flag and Burgundy Glow ajuga.

Old-fashioned native plants decorate the front garden of one of San Marcos’ historic houses on Burleson Street, home of local artist Johanna Kohlleppel Hansen, and Spring Lake Garden Club’s Yard of the Month for October. Brilliant yellow blooms of esperanza mingle with deep purple spiderwort and pale blue plumbago blossoms in this hillside yard between Blanco and Moore Street in the Lindsey-Rogers historic district.
