A 61-year-old local man who tried to rob the U.S. Post Office in San Marcos on Thursday remained behind bars the next day in lieu of a $75,000 bond.

Peter James Stoughton, who has no prior Hays County arrest record, reportedly displayed a note saying, “This is a robbery. Hand over the money” to a postal employee around 2 p.m., Commander Brandon Winkenwerder said in an email response to a Daily Record inquiry.

“A detailed description of the offender was provided and he was located at the intersection of Wonder World and Stagecoach by responding police units,” Winkenwerder wrote.

City policy does not allow the newspaper to speak directly to police except in rare instances. Winkenwerder, in response to additional questions, said the case appears to be unprecerdented and may result in federal charges, if postal directors made that determination.
