Officers elected for San Marcos Academy’s new Leo Club

Officers for the newly created Leo Club at San Marcos Academy were announced Oct. 10.

The officers are Ava Webb, president; Milen Rodriguez-Bravo, vice president; Ayo Adekunle, secretary; and Lacey Fields, treasurer.

On hand to lead the students in the oath of office was Mike Jones, president of the San Marcos Lions Club, which sponsors the SMA Leo Club.

Jones presented Webb with a Lions Pin, which she will be able to pass down each year to succeeding presidents of the club.

Also announced were members of the board for the club: Julia Blackstone, Hudson Lee, Maddie Purcell, Chelsea Peralez, Catarina Vazquez and Chimdi Ihediwa.

With almost 50 members, including several international students, the Leo Club meets twice each week and will have a formal installation ceremony for the new officers and board on Dec. 5. Advisers for the club are Nancy Smith, Rhonda McNeil and Diane Groves, who are all members of the San Marcos Lions.

For their first community service project, several of the Leos filled sacks recently for School Fuel. The club will plan other projects throughout the year, focusing on hunger, literacy, health services and the environment. They will also partner with the San Marcos Lions to assist with the annual Christmas Basket campaign.

In the spring, the Leos will sponsor the annual Culture Fair at the Academy to showcase various countries represented at SMA. The students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Lion’s Club Texas Regional District Convention at SMA on May 1-2, 2020.
