San Marcos City Councilman Saul Gonzales has announced his intention to seek re-election.

Gonzales, who serves on the council in place 2, said he’s seeking re-election because of the honor of serving the community.

“Maintaining the heritage, culture and safety of San Marcos is important to me, particularly as a native San Marcan and as a husband, father and grandfather to my family living in San Marcos,” Gonzales said in a statement. “I will continue to emphasize economic growth, affordable housing, the preservation of our single-family neighborhoods and the health of our Downtown, while protecting them from more high-rise apartment complexes.”

Gonzales was elected to the city council in a runoff election on Dec. 13, 2016 for a three-year term in Place 2. He took his oath of office on Dec. 21, 2016.

In his re-election announcement, Gonzales touted his voting record, which he says “has always based on the best interest of the City of San Marcos, its growth and people.

“I voted against converting LBJ and Guadalupe Streets to two-way traffic because most citizens did not agree with it and the cost would have been extremely high,” Gonzales said. “I voted for limiting campaign contributions to mayor and city council races. I voted for the SMART (San Marcos Air Rail Truck) Terminal for new jobs and economic development, while opposing high-density projects in our neighborhoods.”Twitter:
