Martindale to host 3rd annual River Appreciation Weekend

Martindale to host 3rd annual River Appreciation Weekend

The town of Martindale — situated a few miles down river from San Marcos — announces its third-annual river celebration set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 to 21, from 5 - 10 p.m. downtown with a variety of performances, an art exhibit, a vendor night market, screening of the multi-award winning documentary “Yakona” and local river advocacy organizations.

River Appreciation Weekend will be free and open to the public, hosted inside the historic Crook Store located at 413 Main St. and on the lawn space between the Martindale River Cafe and Duett’s Texas Club.

Made possible by the City of Martindale and the River Advisory Board, the weekend will feature discussions of responsible river usage by locals and tourists alike.

Local Aztec dance groups will perform at 6 p.m. on both days, as well as live music by Combo Cosmico from 8:45 10 p.m. on Friday and Como Las Movies from 8 - 9 p.m. on Saturday. Awards for River Stewardship will be given out at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday while an artisan exhibit and vendor night market will be underway from 5 - 9 p.m.

“This annual event honors the San Marcos River, one of the largest aquifer-driven spring systems on Earth,” Chelsea James, head organizer, said. “This sacred river has been inhabited for over 11,000 years and it’s our responsibility to keep it pristine and healthy for future generations. We hope River Appreciation Weekend will foster responsible river stewardship through indigenous dance, art, live music and a strengthened sense of community among those who cherish this remarkable river.”
