Bobcats down rival Roadrunners for win

Texas State knocked off rival the UTSA Roadrunners in a 3-1 [26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16] to claim the I-35 Rivalry Series in volleyball.

The Bobcats moved to 61-14 overall against the Roadrunners on the volleyball court and improved their regular season record to 3-1 overall.

UTSA jumped out to an early lead 10-6 as the Bobcats struggled to keep the Roadrunners in striking distance. Soon the Roadrunners were at set point up 24-16.

An attacking error by UTSA allowed Texas State to get the ball to stave off an early first set loss. The Bobcats then went on a 10-0 run and stole the first set at 2624.

After dropping the first set in stunning fashion, the Roadrunners bounced back and won the second set at 25-19 to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, UTSA jumped out to a 7-2 lead. But the Bobcats went on a 11-6 run and tied the game at 13-13. The two teams then traded the lead back and forth before the set was tied at 20-20.

UTSA briefly took the lead at 21-20 before Texas State responded with a 3-0 to retake the lead at 23-21. The Roadrunners tied the game at 23-23 following a Bobcat attacking error and a kill. But Texas State slammed the door on a third set win for the Roadrunners, as two straight kills from middle blocker Bailey Hanner allowed the Bobcats to win the set 25-23 and lead the match 2-1.

The fourth set saw UTSA take a 5-3 lead only for the Bobcats to go on a 7-1 run and lead 106. The run was enough for Texas State, leading the Bobcats to take a commanding 19-9 lead over the Roadrunners en route to a 25-16 set and match win.

Texas State goes on the road to Hawaii on Wednesday.
