KZSM – Explore Your World—Expand Your Horizons

Even if you’re not going back to school, this time of year somehow invites new experiences. Many of our programs at KZSM 104.1LPFM/KZSM.org offer opportunities for exploring your world and your community. For instance, the music you hear on “Celtic Corner” (Saturday noon-2 p.m.) or “The Latin Energy Show” (Thursday 7-8 p.m.) might both connect you to your musical roots and show you how far they expand.

On “Celtic Corner,” host Limey’s Lass (Jeanne Randall) celebrates the people and the culture of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and some other areas such as Brittany, but her selections might originate from the US, Canada or Australia — any place Celtic people have settled with their music. And her playlist reflects the rich variety of an evolving tradition — everything from lively jigs and reels to poignant ballads and unexpected combinations like Beatles tunes on the bagpipe.

Similarly, on “The Latin Energy Show,” DJ Alpha (Joshua Gomez) showcases the amazing variety of Latin music, including Tejano, Salsa, Merengue, Rhumba, Latin Freestyle, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Bachata and more. On his show, you might hear the Latin music you already know and love or a sound you’ve never heard but will learn to love.

Becoming involved in your community can also expand your horizons. Tune in to “Open Door” (Wednesdays noon-3 p.m. and Thursdays noon-2 p.m.) for community news and information. Whether it’s the holiday closing of Cheatham Street or the latest film in the Price Center series, host Rob Roark will keep you informed and talk with guests who provide background and previews for their events.

To experience our beautiful, fragile Hill Country ecosystem more personally, tune in to “Wonderful World” from 11:30 p.m. to noon on the second Tuesday of the month. Host Diane Wassenich of the San Marcos River Foundation says, “I hope our listeners will learn something wonderful and new about what is going on locally that affects their very own environment that they experience every day.”

Or you might consider exploring the variable, sometimes colorful political landscape of our community on “We the People” Friday evenings from 7-8 p.m. Host Rob Roark interviews politicians, activists, business leaders, and ordinary citizens about local issues of all kinds. He reminds his listeners on every show that “one person can make a difference.”

Check out these shows, and all our programming, for new sounds, new voices, and new perspectives.
