City receives 36th consecutive award for operating budget document

CITY OF SAN MARCOS

For the 36th time, the city of San Marcos received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for their Fiscal Year 2023-2024 operating budget document from the Government Finance Officers Association, which recognizes transparency and responsible financial stewardship.

The city’s Finance Department submitted the 2023-2024 operating budget document for award consideration. The document was evaluated against the high standards of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the city’s financial story.

“We are proud to uphold the principles of sound financial management, which are critical to earning and maintaining the trust of our community,” Finance Director Jon Locke said. “This award is not just a reflection of our past successes but also underscores our continued commitment to providing clear and comprehensive financial information.”

To qualify for the award, the city of San Marcos’ operating budget document was judged by the GFOA’s impartial review committee. The committee includes representatives from government, public accounting and academic professions.

“We continue to carefully navigate our budget process to ensure we do our best to meet the needs of our city team and the San Marcos community,” San Marcos City Manager Stephanie Reyes said. “This award recognizes the hard work of the Finance Department, City Council as well as our leadership team, and reflects fiscal integrity and the responsibility we have to spend public funds responsibly and with transparency.”

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Since it was established in 1984, approximately 1,800 state and local governments, special districts and school districts have been recognized for transparency in budgeting.
