Colton’s Corner: Sports are back

Colton’s Corner: Sports are back

OPINION

The dreaded dog days of the summer sports season are finally over.

As much fun as it was to have the European Cup, the Copa America and the Olympics all during the summer, I always miss seeing both the Rattlers and the Bobcats on the field.

My “sports hibernation” is over. I’m ready to get back into the swing of things.

It was something I noticed when I watched the volleyball scrimmages over in Wimberley where San Marcos competed last weekend. It’s different when you watch everything on a television screen, but you don’t have a vested interest.

Even though it was a scrimmage, it was nice to see the Rattlers compete and see the improvement of the team from last year while being up close to the action.

The same goes for the Texas State football team.

The preseason hype for the Bobcats is burning at an all-time high and something we haven’t seen since, at minimum, the glory days of Barrick Nealy or even the early 80s teams that won two national championships.

So many players are gaining preseason recognition at a rate that it is hard to keep up sometimes, and now those same players are gaining more notoriety with the release of CFB25.

Texas State was picked to win the Sun Belt West Division. The hype is there, and it is gaining momentum at a spectacular rate.

But, as the saying goes, talk is cheap.

It’s time to show it on the field.

We haven’t even had a chance to talk about the Bobcat volleyball, which is geared to make a run for another conference championship and a return appearance at the NCAA Tournament.

The Rattler football team is looking to take the next step and snap a painful 11-game losing streak. Bobcat soccer wanted to make a splash with the home opener being against arch-rival UTSA.

Rattler cross country brings back a lot of young athletes hoping to break through and run at the Old Settlers’ Park in Round Rock at the state championships.

So many exciting things are just around the corner this month as sports gets the figurative ball rolling for the 2024-2025 season.

I hope you are ready for another exciting year here in San Marcos.
