Six-week Sustainability Workshop begins in August

In what may be characterized as “transformative,” the Wimberley Parks and Recreation Department is presenting a six-week Sustainability Workshop designed to teach the latest concepts of sustainable living and how to carry them out.

Each Wednesday evening session will explore innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact. Attendees will explore topics such as the social aspects of sustainability, the Engaged Ecology Initiative, water conservation techniques, eco-friendly gardening practices, sustainable DIY and ways to reduce the amount of waste produced by the average citizen. Led by area experts using information pertinent to our area and resources, the workshops aim to provide valuable insights and resources with the goal of fostering a greener, more resilient community in Wimberley.

“We believe that these workshops will provide the community with practical tools and knowledge to live more sustainably,” Natalie Mulin, Program Coordinator for the Wimberley Parks and Recreation Department, said. “By coming together, we can make a significant impact on our environment and ensure a healthier future for generations to come.”

The first workshop will discuss the importance of water in the Wimberley community and the second will cover “fast fashion.” The third session will showcase Wimberley small businesses that practice sustainability in their workplace. As workshop coordinator, Mulin is asking businesses who already employ sustainable practices to contact her at nmulin@cityofwimberley. com.

Session four introduces Engaged Ecology Initiatives and the fifth workshop teaches creatives how to reimagine and use materials otherwise thrown away. In session six, a discussion about making green spaces more habitable for birds will be led by a Texas Parks and Wildlife professional.

The Wimberley Parks and Recreation Department dedicates itself to enhancing the quality of life for residents by providing exceptional parks, programs and recreational opportunities that promote a healthy and sustainable community.

The six-week series begins Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m. and continues through Sept. 11. Open to all community members, the workshops will take place at the Wimberley Community Center, 14068 RR12.
