Police work Texas Roadhouse for Special Olympics fundraiser
Once a year across the United States — instead of the typical citation — one can get a steak, potato and rolls with honey butter from a police officer, and all tips go toward bolstering an area Special Olympics program. The Texas Roadhouse, located at 1502 I-35 Frontage Road, had servers from the Department of Public Safety, San Marcos Police Department, San Marcos Fire Department and the Texas State University Police Department on Thursday. TXST Mounted Patrol, the horse mounted unit, as well as Brady the therapy dog were also on site.
Eve Vance, Special Olympics data director, said Tip A Cop raises money for the athletes' competitions and any other events that they need help with.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Freddy Duran said the event does not just involve the DPS and city police forc- es across the U.S. but all law enforcement through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which is composed of police forces from across the country that raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.
“Tonight is the kickoff for the LETR, which is the Law Enforcement Torch Run — Tip a Cop. It's a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The funds raised go 100% to the athletes. 100% to them, for them to participate in the Summer Games, Winter Games, and to their development, to the fundamentals, the physicals, the medical, to everything,” Duran said. “Our cause is to be a partner with them and help them push them a little bit more, and in return, what we see is the smiles, the thank yous, the high fives, and that gives us a little bit more motivation to do the job that we do. So that being said, it's just a great partnership. And this isn't just Texas. This is international. This is across the road. This is across the globe. And last year, LETR in Texas raised $1.5 million for the Texas Special Olympics.”
