San Marcos’ longest played opponent in football is the Seguin Matadors. The two teams first met in 1921 ending with a Rattlers 53-0 win over the Matadors. The two teams have played on and off from 1921-2015 with 83 games played between the two schools, making it one of the longest played series in the state of Texas. San Marcos leads the series over Seguin 40-39-4.
Before Sam Houston made the transition to Football Bowl Subdivision last season, Texas State’s most played opponent in FBS was the North Texas Mean Green. The Bobcats and the Mean Green first played in 1915 with the two teams playing on and off until 1949 coinciding with North Texas leaving the Lone Star Conference, of which they were a founding member of along with Texas State. Both teams later became conference rivals in the Southland from 1986 through 1994. North Texas leads the overall series 29-7-2. The two teams are set to meet again for the 2026 season.
