Calling All Instrumentalists

Rehearsals reconvene for the Aquarena Springs Symphonic Band. The group will be reading new charts in preparation for spring and summer performances.

The community band is welcoming experienced wind and percussion players with high school experience and beyond.

No audition required, only a desire to play music.

Life Long Learning: Register Now!

San Marcos Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Life Long Learning of San Marcos is once again offering new Life Long Learning courses for the greater San Marcos area. The classes are primarily for those age 60 and above, but adults of any age are welcome to register. To REGISTER or for more information on the classes, please stop by the Activity Center at 501 East Hopkins, Call 512-393-8280 or visit sanmarcostx. gov/activeSMTX and search LLL for Life Long Learning courses. A minimum number of registrants is required for these classes to make.

Turtle Tuesdays

When: Every Tuesday, 10 - 11 a.m.

Where: San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside What: Participants can interact with, feed and create enrichmentitems for the turtles who call the Discovery Center home. Food and supplies are provided, and no registration is required for this program. FREE!

Wild Wednesdays

When: Every Wednesday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 - 5 p.m.

San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive Wild Wednesdays will take place every Wednesday with a different wildlife theme each month. This free, kid-focused program includes education through natural history items, a self-guided activity, thematic color sheet, craft and more. No registration is required for this come-and-go program. FREE!

60+ Game Day

When: Meets every Monday- except City Holidays, 12:30 - 4 p.m.

What: Game materials for Bridge, Mexican Train Dominoes, Hand & Foot, and 42 are provided. New members are welcome. We had a great response from people that want to learn to play Mahjong. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough people to teach them. If you know how to play Mahjong and are interested in helping others learn to play, please join us for Game Day on Mondays. We have also been asked to see if there are people interested in playing Pinochle, Euchre, Backgammon, Canasta, and regular dominoes. If you have any questions, or would like to play any of these games, call 512-393-8275 or email to [email protected].

Registration for Game Day is no longer required. Make sure you arrive on time to get in on a game!

Gamelan Lipi Awan

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Gamelan Lipi Awan, a Balinese gamelan gong kebar orchestra performs! A unique experience you won’t want to miss!

Zentangle

When: Monday, May 6, 10 to 11 a.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Come make Zentangles with others. A Zentangle is a miniature abstract work of art created by a collection of patterns. It is typically done on a 3.5' X 3.5' paper 'tile' using a pencil and a black pen. The small size allows for a work of art that can be completed in a relatively short period of time. Yoga: Monday Night Reset

When: Monday, May 6, 13 & 20, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Two Stepping Across Texas Walking Program

When: Kickoff Event, Tuesday May 7 What: The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department is starting a free walking program for the 60+ community. The program will begin with a kickoff event on Tuesday, May 7, and will run for approximately 10 weeks. The walking program will be made up of teams and each team may have up to 8 team members. Each member of a team will keep track of the miles they walk individually/per week.

The team members will work together to walk the distance across Texas, 832 miles, in 10 weeks. We will also schedule other group walks at 9 a.m. on Thursdays.

Garabatos

Express Yourself! Self-Discovery through Expressive Arts When: Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. AND Thursdays, May 9 & 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Put on a lens of discovery and use art-making, writing, play, sound, and movement to explore and express who you are! Participants love Express Yourself for the community and playfulness, and leave feeling inspired, free, and more at ease within themselves. No creative arts skills are required, just a willingness to have fun and try something new! All materials provided. Funded by St. David's Foundation; for ages 18 and up.

Active Hope

Mindfulness Meditation

60+ Trivia Time

When: Wednesday, May 8, 1 p.m.

What: We are looking for trivia buffs ages 60 and above to join us for our new program, 60+ Trivia Time, a pub style trivia game. This monthly event will include participants answering multiple choice questions on a variety of topics through Trivia Nerd, a web based, trivia hosting platform.

A mobile device, such as a smart phone, a tablet, or laptop computer, is required to play 60+Trivia Time. The questions and possible answers will be projected onto a screen and will also be displayed on the player’s device. Each participant will use their device to select their answers. Trivia Nerd will keep track of individual scores. Points are awarded for correct answers and additional points are awarded to players that answer the questions the fastest. The topic for the first round will be chosen by the host and additional topics will be chosen by the participants. Registration for Trivia time is not required. You will not have to download anything to your device. Play on any smart phone, tablet, or laptop, via a web browser.

Gelli Painting

When: Wednesday, May 8, 15, 22 & 29; 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Come have fun and let loose! Experiment with this wonderful way to create your own papers. Classes begin with a gentle stretch to get us all in the right frame of mind and promote a spirit of camaraderie and trust in a safe, non-judgmental space where process takes precedence over product. Queer Game Night

When: Wednesday, May 8 & 22, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Where: Anita Reyes Park, 115 Lockwood Drive What: Party in Your Park takes place four times each year. We bring the party to you by visiting various neighborhood parks. Each event features family-friendly fun, including yard games, music, refreshments and more! FREE!

Migratory Bird Day Festival

When: May 11, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive What: Please join us as we celebrate birds during this fun, interactive festival for the whole family. Bird walks, bird music, games, partner booths, activities and a migratory bird obstacle course are a few of the things we have in store for you. This festival is part of a global effort to further migratory bird conservation by creating a worldwide campaign organized around the planet’s major migratory bird corridors.
