The 47th Annual Heritage Home Tour will be in full swing by the time you read this. But for anyone getting your paper on Saturday, it’s not too late to buy your tickets now.
Heritage home tours always feature interesting homes and this one is no different. The six small historic-area houses and two huge contemporary La Cima houses are worth seeing and hearing about. Add to that, there is a tiny historic “mystery house” that official records seem to have overlooked. Was it a oneroom school? Was it moved to the Lindsey-Rogers district from the MLK area, or is it original to its current site? This 1800s building is tucked away on a private historic district back lot. It clearly needs preserving, but no one knows anything about it except that it might be an old one-room school. In addition to homes this year, HASM is also spotlighting the historic districts themselves with a sort of “drive-by history lesson” that you will access from your own car.
Docents will be stationed throughout the area, prepared to tell you pertinent items at your car window. There will even be a horse-drawn buggy and lots of pedicabs to let you see the Dunbar, Belvin and San Antonio historic districts as our ancestors would have…in the open air.
Be sure to come hungry, as there will be lots of tasty and complimentary foods along the route.
There will be a bake sale at the Cock House Museum, so that visitors can eat on site, or take boxed things home, or both. Even if you don’t take the whole tour, after 1 p.m. on Sunday, participants can do the rides and come see what homemade things still remain at the bake sale.
