Calling All Instrumentalists

Rehearsals reconvene for the Aquarena Springs Symphonic Band. The group will be reading new charts in preparation for spring and summer performances.

The community band is welcoming experienced wind and percussion players with high school experience and beyond.

No audition required, only a desire to play music.

Life Long Learning: Register Now!

San Marcos Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Life Long Learning of San Marcos is once again offering new Life Long Learning courses for the greater San Marcos area. The classes are primarily for those age 60 and above, but adults of any age are welcome to register. To REGISTER or for more information on the classes, please stop by the Activity Center at 501 East Hopkins, Call 512-393-8280 or visit sanmarcostx. gov/activeSMTX and search LLL for Life Long Learning courses. A minimum number of registrants is required for these classes to make.

Turtle Tuesdays

When: Every Tuesday, 10 - 11 a.m.

Where: San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside What: Participants can interact with, feed and create enrichmentitems for the turtles who call the Discovery Center home. Food and supplies are provided, and no registration is required for this program. FREE!

60+ Game Day

When: Meets every Monday except City Holidays, from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Activity Center What: Join us for Game Day Game materials for Bridge, Mexican Train Dominoes, Hand & Foot and 42 are provided. We will add new games at your request! New members are welcome. Registration for Game Day is no longer required. Make sure you arrive on time to get in on a game!

Cover Letters Made Easy

When: Mondays, 9 - 10 a.m.

Who: Market yourself and gain an edge in today's job market by learning how to write an effective cover letter. We will discuss components of a cover letter, review proper formatting, determine what to include and what to leave out.

Film & Discussion: Film — Purple: America, We Need to Talk When: Sunday, April 21, 3 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Screen the movie Purple: America, We Need to Talk and participate in a facilitated discussion as part of the “Better Together Film Festival”. The 'Better Together Film Festival' is part of the 7th Annual National Week of Conversation. This campaign offers Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs the tools and platform needed to call on our civic leaders and personally take action to reject violence, support problem solving, and build rather than break our civic institutions and social ties. Presented by 'The Idea Loom' and facilitated by Heidi Holliday, MPA. Recommended for adults; minors should be accompanied by a participating adult.

Queer Game Night

Garabatos

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Release your inner artist using a variety of media and playful techniques to gain confidence, become more mindful, slow down, tune your observational and improvisational skills, and be more present. Express Yourself! Self-Discovery through Expressive Arts

When: Tuesday, April 23 & 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. AND Thursday, April 4,11 & 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. NO MEETING ON April 25th!

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Put on a lens of discovery and use art-making, writing, play, sound, and movement to explore and express who you are! Participants love Express Yourself for the community and playfulness, and leave feeling inspired, free, and more at ease within themselves. No creative arts skills are required, just a willingness to have fun and try something new! Materials provided.

WellMed Health and Wellness Class High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

When: Tuesday, April 23, 10 a.m.

What: WellMed Health and Wellness classes are designed for the senior population in our community. Knowing how to stay healthy can make you healthier! WellMed’s Clinic Programs and Patient Education team is dedicated to helping support patients and local seniors in understanding their health and how they can learn to improve, and in some cases, enhance their lifestyle. Classes include topics that impact the health and wellness of seniors in our community. The monthly classes are free and open to the public. There will be one or two different topics every month. The two topics are Blood Pressure and Cholesterol. Areas that will be discussed for Blood Pressure include what is blood pressure, what blood pressure numbers mean, risk factors for high blood pressure, complications of high blood pressure, management of high blood pressure. Areas that will be discussed for Cholesterol include what cholesterol is, why we need it, where cholesterol comes from, why high cholesterol is a big deal, signs and symptoms of high cholesterol, understanding your results and lifestyle factors.

Squashing Stress

When: Wednesday, April 24; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Learn the appeal and versatility of DAS, Air Dry paper-based clay—to knead, roll, shape and form objects while enjoying the stress reduction provided by the soothing, tactile nature of the material. Once dry, pieces are painted and glazed and used to make jewelry, trinket trays, ornaments, small sculptures and whatever else we can imagine. Classes begin with a gentle stretch to get us all in the right frame of mind and promote a spirit of camaraderie and trust in a safe, non-judgmental space where process takes precedence over product. All materials provided.

60+ Trivia Time

When: Wednesday, April 24, 1 p.m.

What: We are looking for trivia buffs ages 60 and above to join us for our new program, 60+ Trivia Time, a pub style trivia game! This monthly event will include participants answering multiple choice questions on a variety of topics through Trivia Nerd, a web based, trivia hosting platform. A mobile device, such as a smart phone, a tablet, or laptop computer, is required to play 60+Trivia Time. The questions and possible answers will be projected onto a screen and will also be displayed on the player’s device. Each participant will use their device to select their answers. Trivia Nerd will keep track of individual scores. Points are awarded for correct answers and additional points are awarded to players that answer the questions the fastest. The topic for the first round will be chosen by the host and additional topics will be chosen by the participants. Registration for Trivia time is not required. You will not have to download anything to your device. Play on any smart phone, tablet, or laptop, via a web browser.

60+ S.M.A.S.H. Bowling Social When: Thursday, April 25, 2 - 4 p.m.

What: The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation and Sunset Bowling Lanes are hosting a Bowling Social each month, on Thursday afternoons. These bowling events are for ages 60 + Where: Sunset Bowling Lanes, 1304 HWY 123 Details: The fee for this event is $5/person, which includes shoe rental and two games of bowling.
