Exploring Nature: New A

rrivals

Let me remind you of some upcoming birding festivals you might enjoy.

First comes the Matagorda Bay Birdfest, set for April 12, 13 and 14 at Palacios, Texas. This event features speakers, birding tours, raptor displays and a keynote dinner, so you’ll have a chance to see birds and eat well, too. For information, visit Matagorda Bay birdfest.org.

Second, drop down to Weslaco for the Lower Rio Grande Valley’s spring birding festival, Spring Chirps. It’s set for April 17-20 and will feature birds, butterflies and dragonflies. Visit Spring-Chirps.com.

The most exciting sighting for many participants last year was a bare-throated tiger-heron. Other folks commented on the new border wall, a tall structure that is lit up at night.

Also, check out the 22nd annual FeatherFest, set for April 18 - 21 in Galveston. There will be birding and photo field trips to beach, bay and High Island locations, led by local experts. Check out GalvestonFeatherFest. com or call 832 459-5533 for information.

Last, but definitely not least, you can go to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Birdiest Festival in America. It’s set for April 24 - 28 and you can visit Birdiest-Festival.org for more information. Lots of roseate spoonbills!

By the way, there is also a fine festival in Texas devoted not to birds, but to butterflies. The Texas Butterfly Festival is held during the third week of October, in Mission, Texas.

Visit texasbutterfly.com or call 800 580-2700 for information.

Birds, butterflies or dragonflies, it’s hard to go wrong with a good festival — just make your choices and enjoy the fun.
