Speaking up: Starting a new nonprofit the San Marcos Civics Club

While the San Marcos City Staff and Council are headed in the right direction with their “Dream Session” initiative, we need a resource to help our neighbors feel empowered to organize and know how to navigate concerns within our local government. As a former City Council Member, I know all too well what people think about how things are run and our recent 2022 San Marcos “National Community Survey” proved that there’s a lot of work to be done to build trust between our local government and its community members. For that reason I’m starting the San Marcos Civics Club.

As a former City Council Member, I know all too well what people think about how things are run and our recent 2022 San Marcos “National Community Survey” proved that there’s a lot of work to be done to build trust between our local government and its community members. For that reason I’m starting the San Marcos Civics Club.

We’re a nonpartisan affiliated group and believe that by creating educational and accessible resources for the community they will be more inclined to speak up at meetings/write in, apply to serve on our boards and commissions, as well as vote in more elections. It is our goal to meet on the third Monday of each month to share resources with neighbors, talk about local issues, and find the best avenue to address that concern. Getting involved can feel intimidating - the San Marcos Civics Club is here to help with that feeling!

Our first meeting will be Monday January 20th at Tantra Coffee House (217 W Hopkins St) at 6:30 pm. We’ll discuss a document that outlines how to contact City Staff and Council, as well as break down how to read an agenda and what to expect during a meeting. Then we’ll discuss specific issues members of the community bring forward and what steps they can take to get the ball rolling for their issue. Lastly, we’ll talk about future meetings, items to consider, talents and availability to help the club grow, and break to network.

We hope to see you there, all are welcome!
