Texas State’s historic season came to an end this past Thursday as the Bobcats fell to the SMU Mustangs 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was not the performance Head Coach Sean Huiet was wanting following the Bobcats first At-Large Bid to the NCAA Tournament in program history.

“We are a little frustrated tonight,” Huiet said. “We didn’t think that was our best performance. Against a team like SMU, you have to bring your best. That’s not who we are and how our season has been. We were not ourselves tonight and that’s what the outcome showed.”

Texas State finishes the season with a 20-10 record and a 12-4 conference record.

SMU advances to the second round where they will play Texas before press time.

The Longhorns defeated Texas A&M 3-1 in their first round matchup.

It was a competitive first set which saw the Bobcats trail the Mustangs 6-5.

But SMU went on a 7-0 run to take control of the set to win the first set 2520.

The Mustangs continued to roll through the Bobcats as Texas State fell behind 22-14.

Despite going on a 5-1 run to trim the lead, Texas State was unable to comeback falling in the second set 25-19.

SMU slammed the door on a potential reverse sweep for the Bobcats winning third set 25-16.

One of the keys for the Mustangs was their aggression on offense that kept the Bobcats out of system throughout the game.

“I thought [SMU] were very aggressive tonight,” Huiet said. “They were low error. They put the ball on our side and we made a pretty high error.”

But despite the sweep, Huiet reiterated that the loss shouldn’t define the historic season for Texas State.

“We all know how we felt last year after they didn’t call out our name,” Huiet said. “We felt that we got done what we needed to do with a couple of big wins and a high RPI. We did something at Texas State that has never been done before and that is special.”
