Proposition 5 will build better future

On Nov. 7, as citizens we will have the opportunity to vote on numerous propositions to build a better future for Texas. Some will help provide property tax relief for homeowners, others will fund water projects and broadband internet, but one is near and dear to our community here in San Marcos.

On Nov. 7, as citizens we will have the opportunity to vote on numerous propositions to build a better future for Texas. Some will help provide property tax relief for homeowners, others will fund water projects and broadband internet, but one is near and dear to our community here in San Marcos.

Proposition 5, The Texas University Fund will also be on the ballot. This statewide initiative creates a $3.9 billion endowment for Texas State University, Texas Tech University, the University of Houston, and the University of North Texas.

By voting yes on Proposition 5 this will help support Texas State University’s mission to become a Tier 1 Research institution. Making Texas State a world class place for cutting edge research, science and learning.

Funding for this involves no new taxes but comes from a one-time infusion of funds from the state’s budget surplus, along with funds from the National Research University Fund.

The Texas Legislature overwhelmingly approved this bipartisan Prop 5 legislation, but now, you the voter must make it official by voting for it in this Constitutional Amendment election. Early voting begins October 23rd, and ends on Friday, November 3rd. Election Day is November 7th. A vote for Proposition 5 is a vote to invest in the future of Texas and a vote to support Texas State.

As a proud Bobcat alum I will be voting yes on Prop 5 and I encourage our San Marcos community to vote yes on Prop 5.
