KZSM–Yesterday, Today,Tomorrow

Several years ago, a small group of San Marcans got together and came up with an idea to form a radio station to serve the needs of the community.

A radio license was issued by the Federal Communications Commission to build a station In San Marcos.

The equipment was purchased, and an antenna was erected, and this group of volunteers began the process of creating a community radio station.

There had been some concern that the broadcast signal that some folks were hearing was from a “pirate” radio station as had been heard several years earlier, but that was all part of the process of setting up equipment, tuning it, and looking for solutions to anticipated broadcast problems. Eventually, the license was returned to the FCC, yet this group of volunteers were determined to create a radio station, nonetheless.

KZSM.org began broadcasting their signal on the internet in January of 2017 with a determined and dedicated staff producing a diverse program schedule with a mixed variety of musical genres, sports programs, and commentaries.

Since then, many program hosts have passed through our doors; some are still with us today.

Our group of volunteers are your friends, neighbors, and co-workers who are local and share their various passions and interests with the community that they love.

From producing programs to hosting events such as the Kissing Alley Concert series to Heavy Metal extravaganzas, we strive to entertain, engage, and enlighten our fans and listeners.

Last year, the city of San Marcos donated the low-power FM license they acquired in 1998 for emergency broadcasting to the San Marcos Community Radio Association. KZSM Community Radio will soon become KZSM 104.1 LP.

This low power license will enable us to broadcast over the airwaves, and we will also become the custodians of the Emergency Broadcast System.

We will begin broadcasting by the end of October.

There is still much work to be done until then.

One can be assured, however, that these dedicated volunteers will get it done.

If you would like to become a member of the KZSM family, we would love to have you join us, whether it be hosting a program, providing technical support, or helping to do “roadie work” setting up for our various events.

For information on how to volunteer, email [email protected], or visit our website, where you will also find our complete program schedule.
