The original two-story 130-year-old chapel provides a backdrop to the eclectic Shop 1893, which opened as a response to the COVID-induced lack of venue rentals — the primary source of revenue for the Price Center. The shop now features more than 30 individual vendors — including the Price Center and Barely Paper Bear.

“I’m so happy to have space in Shop 1893,” said Carol Powers, former owner of Paper Bear in downtown San Marcos, who currently rents two spaces in Shop 1893. “There’s good energy and a sense of community in the Shop. Friendly conversation, amazing variety, and great prices, make a must stop.”

Guests can visit Shop 1893 for unusual new, vintage, antiques, collectibles, unique maker supplies, curated clothing, household goods, home décor, jewelry, original art, repurposed items and so much more. Shop 1893 is open Wednesdays – Fridays, 12 - 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10-3. Proceeds from shop sales and all donated items go directly to help operate and maintain the Price Center & Garden. Gently-used donated items are always welcome.

“What began as an effort to remain open and relevant on some level has turned into a truly special experience in downtown San Marcos,” said Price Center director Clay DeStefano. “We couldn’t be more grateful for how the shop helps bring so many new people into the Price Center and is now generating nearly 20% of our annual operating revenue.”

In addition, a new monthly market — 1893 Flea — provides a monthly downtown flea market on the second Saturday of each month. The Flea Market runs from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and features clearance PC items, other shop vendor booths and individual booths from community members. Booths are set up inside and outside the Center. A limited number of tables are available to rent for $20 each.
