KZSM: Talking About You —Talking With You

KZSM: Talking About You —Talking With You

At KZSM.org, our mission is to broadcast the many voices of our community. You can tune in to one of our talk shows to hear some of those voices conversing about science, literature, or local politics, or you can learn about resources available to you.

Veterans Hour (Sundays 11 a.m. to noon) provides resources for “those who serve, and those who serve those who serve." Hosts Dee Bartlett and Steve Jones provide discussion and resources to help veterans and their families with the sometimes-difficult adjustment to civilian life.

From 2-3 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, host Marianne Reese, Director of LifeLong Learning of San Marcos, presents “SeniorCentric,” a broadcast focused on older members of the community.  The show includes a segment “On Your Health” aimed at enhancing the quality of life, short bits of timely information, and a calendar of upcoming community events.

If you’ve ever been curious about science and the scientists who do research, tune in the “Science Stories,” every other Friday from 3-4 p.m. Host Mateo Garcia’s  interviews with researchers reveal their personalities as well as their work. “I sometimes feel there’s a shade of mystery around scientists,” Garcia explains. “My idea is to show that scientists are human too, with hobbies, anecdotes, opinions, limitations, and problems like everyone else.”

Readers in the San Marcos area can hear in-depth conversations with local writers and readers on “Bookmarked” (Tuesdays 4-5 p.m.). Recent shows featured local poet E. D. Watson reading from her new collection “Anorexorcism,” and historian Gregg Andrews discussing his new book “Shanty Boats and Roustabouts.”

On “We the People” (Fridays 7-8 p.m.) those in-depth conversations examine the life of the community.  Host Rob Roark talks with everyone and anyone with something to say, from the Mayor and the County Judge to activists agitating for change. On every broadcast, he urges listeners to get involved and make a difference.

And on “Raices” (Roots) (Sundays 5-6 p.m.) host Cathy Lara uses both English and Spanish to trace the roots of our changing community, recording the history of Latinos in San Marcos. She talks with musicians, business owners and “anybody with a story out there who wants to preserve it. We don’t want those traditions to die!”
